It's curious that Bonsai - the art of dwarfing trees - and Foot Binding - the art of dwarfing feet - both originated from China in a relatively narrow, five hundred year period. It's quite a different cultural outlook than, say, ours where everything is super-sized and everyone drives Hummers.
